General Tips for your
Resume
(sometimes called curriculum vitae)

Education

Degrees and Certifications

When entering your education, it is ok to not add the year but rather (degree achieved). If you are working on certifications but haven't completed, you can add "certification XX, in progress"

Breaks in employment

The great UNKNOWN

Listen, life happens.  If you took a break to attend to a family emergency, you can note if you like.  Perhaps you took a break to focus on obtaining a degree, but are now avail for full time work.  An asterisks with one line explaining can be the difference between a recruiter passing on you as a "job hopper" or a potential lead.  Did you work many "temp jobs" we like to recommend adding to the right of each paragraph with temp work "successfully completed assignment" or "was converted to full time employee at end of temp assignment" if that is true.  That tells the reader that you successfully completed the project, assignment, task and were eligible for hire or rehire.

Your superpower!

What is your special skill??

What makes you special?  What do employers or co-workers like about you?  If you like a SUMMARY at top of resume, ask your colleagues, employer, trusted friend.  Maybe it is, "Exceptional project manager that can earn trust with stakeholders and deliver results on time every time."  Maybe you are a salesperson that "builds relationships that result in sales" whatever sets you apart from other applicants.

Step 1 - Build Your Resume for the Job You Want

As a talent acquisition professional who specializes in helping people land jobs, let me break this down for you: your resume is your ticket to the interview. The good news? The job description literally tells you what the company wants. The challenge? Making sure your resume clearly shows you’re the right fit.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Start with the Job Description

The job description is your guide. It’s not just a list of requirements—it’s a cheat sheet for what the company values. Never lie or exaggerate your experience, but don’t underestimate how transferable your skills might be. Many times, companies use specific software or tools for reasons like cost or compatibility with their systems. If you haven’t used the exact brand, that’s okay—highlight your experience with similar tools.

2. Match Your Skills to Their Needs

Print out the job description and your resume. Compare them point by point. For every skill or tool listed in the job description, ask yourself:

  • Do I have direct experience with this?

  • Have I used something similar?

  • How can I demonstrate that I can learn this quickly?

Example 1:
The job requires “Concur" skills but you’ve worked with "Egencia" which is a similar tool. Update your resume like this:

  • Advanced experience with Egencia, which is similar to Concur process.

Example 2:
The job mentions “Bluebeam,” but you’ve only used Procore or Accubid.

  • 4 years’ experience using Procore and Accubid technology (comparable to Bluebeam).

3. Use Tools to Fine-Tune Your Resume

Don't forget to spell check and grammar check your resume.  It might seem obvious but you would be surprised how often we miss a detail and that can be the difference between and interview and a pass.

4. Review and Get Feedback

Pretend you’re a recruiter scanning your resume for 60 seconds. Do your most relevant skills and accomplishments stand out? Better yet, ask a trusted friend, mentor, or family member to review it. Their fresh perspective can help you catch things you missed.

5. Keep It ATS-Friendly

Avoid adding pictures, colored fonts, or overly creative designs. Some applicant tracking systems (ATS) can’t read these elements, which might cause your resume to be rejected automatically. Stick to a clean, professional format.

Final Check

Once you’ve matched your skills, proofread, and ensured your resume aligns with the job description, you’re ready to hit submit.
